Trekking along the Markha River through one of the world’s highest inhabited plateaus, we revel in spectacular views of the Great Himalayan, Ladakh, and Zanskar ranges. We start in the Ladakhi "capital" of Leh where we spend a few days acclimatizing and visiting the many Buddhist monasteries in the Indus Valley. Our route meanders through willow groves, around groves of wild roses, and pastel canyons festooned with multi-hued prayer flags undulating in the breeze. A chance to meet nomadic families herding their yaks and a visit to a small monastery, where butter lamps are lit in the morning and evening by an elderly nun, create a memorable experience.
